Listening to the Voices of Experienced Workers in Hamilton: Barriers and Solutions

As people remain in the workplace longer they face a distinct set of barriers when looking for employment. This project entailed interviewing 20 experienced workers (people 45 years of age and over) to discover their barriers to employment. A literature search was carried out to discover what research has been done in the past regarding barriers to employment for this group.

The major self-identified barriers were: discrimination due to age; lack of education and/or credentials; and lack of computer skills.

A call to action is included with recommendations for the future.

This is the second of quarterly releases that provides information about real-time labour demand in Hamilton. The information presented reflects online job postings from July to September 2013.

Information is given on the type of employment, job postings by industry, and job postings by occupation.

The top specified industries were: retail and wholesale trade, manufacturing, health care and social assistance.


Listening to the Voices of Experienced Workers in Hamilton: Barriers and Solutions

Aiding experienced workers (people 44+) to find employment in today’s economy can be challenging. This event for front-line employment service providers will release the results of Workforce Planning Hamilton’s recent research project on the challenges facing local unemployed experienced workers, and will provide hands-on tips to help motivate them to reach their goals.

A local labour market profile of experienced workers will be presented including: the number of EW in Hamilton; age distribution; labour force activity; educational levels; industries employed in, and occupations.

The morning features a keynote address by JP Hatala, founder of the Social Capital Development firm Flowork International, Professor at George Brown College in the Career and Work Counselor Program.

WorkBound Program – Goodwill King William Location

WorkBound is Funded by Service Canada

Each session of the WorkBound program is 11 weeks in total. The program will run Monday to Friday with a combination of half and full days. There will be eight weeks of pre-employment workshops and work training days designed to help prepare participants to find and maintain employment. This will be followed by a volunteer/unpaid work placement for 3 weeks with job coaching if needed.

Work Training Days: Although space cannot be guaranteed, we offer opportunities in Office Skills, Light General Assembly, Stairways – Coffee Shop, General Cleaning and Retail

Workplace Communications in Construction Skilled Trades

A new offering of OSLT starts January 2014 at the STARRT Campus of Mohawk College (Stoney Creek). Participants must be Permanent Residents or Protected Persons with a training/experience as plumbers, electricians, carpenters and bricklayers. The course develops the language and communication skills required in these trades. Tuition-free. Transportation assistance.

MODC is excited to announce the opening of our new computer lab in downtown Hamilton! With over 20-workstations, students will have the opportunity to update computer skills in MS-Office 2010.

The Business Computer Applications Certificate program is offered at MODC in partnership with Mohawk College. In just 23-weeks, students can gain the computer skills they need for today’s competitive job market, earn a Mohawk College certificate, and gain confidence knowing they are job-ready!

Workforce Planning Hamilton is in the final phase of the Hiring Immigrants Project, a research study to gain an understanding of employers’ attitudes and experiences in hiring recent immigrants.

Copies of the summary report, Key Findings for Community Members were distributed to share information gleaned, that would assist frontline staff with their interactions with clients and with employers.

To complete the Hiring Immigrants Project we are following up with frontline staff through a short on-line survey.

Brad Spencer, PATH’s Executive Director said, “Conditions in the job market and the needs of the people we work with have changed. The best services we can offer are those directed specifically to the needs of the individuals we work with, in an on-going relationship with an employment coordinator.”

One-on-one service will be bolstered by a full range of workshops. Some of these will support job search skills and others support career decision making, skills development, job retention and employment oriented life skills such as self esteem building, goal setting, time management, computer literacy and money management. PATH workshops will also support the development of employment skills such as basic office administration, customer service, cash register and Smart Serve.
