Workforce Focus, November 2011 - Youth

December 12, 2011

Youth employment has yet to rebound since 1989 highs. For most of the 1990s, employment opportunities for young people (age 15 to 24) were scarce. The recession at the beginning of the decade had a lasting effect on the youth labour market.

In 1989, youth employment and participation rates were at record highs, but following years of layoffs and weak hiring, labour-market conditions for youth hit a 21-year low in 1997.

Job Loss Website Marks 1st Anniversary

November 23, 2011

More than 6,000 people looking for help to cope with job loss have turned to www.lostmyjob.ca in its first year.

Lostmyjob.ca was launched a year ago by the Hamilton Training Advisory Board and the Workforce Planning Board of Grand Erie. Soon after, six other workforce planning boards from Niagara to Windsor began supporting the website. Local organizations across the Hamilton region have also stepped up to promote the website to their clients.

“This site helps with the emotional side of losing a job,” states Judy Travis, executive director of the Hamilton Training Advisory Board. “It’s a sign of the times that we have been going through economically and socially in the past few years. So many people are out of work for the first time and really need support dealing with the social and emotional upheaval they and their families are experiencing. It is sad to see so much unemployment but fortunately there is a lot of help out there.”
